Recently, the packaging world reached a major turning point. Rising environmental awareness and stricter regulations forced manufacturers across the globe to rethink the materials used in everyday life. Among these, polystyrene (PS) — once the dominant choice in food packaging — has been increasingly restricted or banned in many countries for environmental reasons.

In Europe, the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) prohibits PS foam containers and cups, while major U.S. states such as New York, Washington, and California have adopted similar policies. These changes signal a global shift in the plastic packaging industry toward materials that are more recyclable and environmentally responsible. One of the most prominent alternatives is polypropylene (PP) — a recyclable material continuously being refined to meet the sustainability goals of the future.

Innovation That Drives Change

At SCGC, we believe that sustainable progress begins with better materials. This belief led us to collaborate with Milliken, a global leader in specialty chemicals, to develop SCGC™ PP P905J, a high-clarity PP Homopolymer designed to deliver transparency comparable to PP Random Copolymer. It is engineered for food packaging that demands superior clarity while maintaining the strength and toughness needed for thin-wall injection molding applications.

The innovation behind SCGC™ PP P905J combines the strengths of popular PP grades used in food packaging with the ease of recyclability that PS lacks. By incorporating Milad® NX 8000 additive technology from Milliken, this material achieves exceptional clarity levels rivaling PP Random Copolymer. It also improves processing efficiency — allowing lower molding temperatures while retaining excellent mechanical performance — helping manufacturers save up to 10% in energy consumption, as certified by UL.

Clarity, Strength, and Sustainability in One

SCGC™ PP P905J represents more than just a new resin grade. It sets a new standard for the future of food packaging. Exceptional clarity enhances product visibility and premium appeal. High stiffness and impact ensure structural stability in thin-wall applications. Excellent toughness and impact strength provide safety in use.

When compared with PS, SCGC™ PP P905J can reduce material usage by at least 14%, thanks to PP’s lower density. It also requires less energy during processing, resulting in up to 54% lower greenhouse gas emissions. With its superior recyclability, this material helps minimize plastic waste and supports a truly circular packaging economy.
