SCGC Announces Success with Haadthip in Producing Lightweight Caps for Carbonated Drink Weighting Only 1.75 Grams

Business ESG Circular Economy Innovation Product Solutions Sustainability

SCGC has announced a successful collaboration with Haadthip Public Company Limited in developing lightweight caps for carbonated drink that reduce the cap weight from 2.45 grams to 1.75 grams, achieving a 28% reduction in material use while maintaining the same quality. This innovation aligns with the sustainability goals across the supply chain, utilizing SCGC GREEN POLYMER™ SX002JA plastic resin, which effectively reduces the amount of plastic used in the product.

This lightweight cap started from a joint mission between Haadthip Public Company Limited and the Coca-Cola business group in Thailand, with technological support from Husky Technologies. The goal was to develop environmentally friendly beverage packaging, starting with redesigning the GME30.40 PET bottle neck, followed by the cap, which resulted in the new 26/22 cap model. This new model is smaller and lighter, reducing its weight from 2.45 grams to just 1.75 grams while still maintaining the ability to retain gas and preserve the quality of the carbonated beverage according to the international standards of the Coca-Cola test protocol, which the SCGC GREEN POLYMER™ SX002JA resin meets effectively and has been used with products.

SX002JA plastic resin under the SCGC GREEN POLYMER™ brand is specially produced using SMX™ technology, which enhances the strength and toughness of the resin. This allows for reduced plastic usage while maintaining durability and strength in the bottle caps. This resin is also notable for its superior gas retention properties under high-temperature conditions, making it suitable for tropical climates like Thailand. Additionally, it offers excellent resistance to environmental stress cracking, ensuring that carbonated beverages can maintain their fizziness for an extended period. Moreover, reducing the weight of the cap also helps lower greenhouse gas emissions by up to 26% from production process that reduces the amount of material used, marking a significant step toward creating sustainable packaging.

This achievement not only reflects the quality of environmentally friendly plastic resin from SCGC GREEN POLYMER™ but also meets market demands by reducing packaging weight and greenhouse gas emissions while preserving product quality. It represents a critical step toward achieving sustainability goals in the beverage industry. For more information, please contact: foodbev_pkg@scg.com
