'For Social Growth, Sustainable Community, and Healthy Environment': The Sustainable Development Approach at Chemical Business, SCG

Chemicals Business, SCG, values society and community and is committed to advancing and fostering community growth in tandem with business activity in a sustainable manner. It has operated within a sustainability framework to achieve "Social Growth, Sustainable Community, and Healthy Environment" through three fundamental approaches: climate resilience, circular economy, and health and safety.

Climate Resilience 
Since the adoption and agreement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations in 2015, the strategy to ensure the sustainability of peace and prosperity for the people and the world, one of the 17 SDGs that the company has focused on is SDG 13, which says, "take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts."

As part of its commitment to attaining SDG 13, Chemicals Business, SCG, has prioritized actions to mitigate the global warming that has far-reaching consequences and is intensifying at an alarming rate. Our project highlights include the following:

• The eco factory model, which is implemented throughout all petrochemical operations at Chemicals Business, SCG. All plants have been certified to meet 14 assessments of eco-industry benchmarks. The Federation of Thai Industries has certified all of Chemicals Business's plants, making it Thailand's first company to operate a 100 percent certified eco factory. Chemicals Business has also launched a hydrocarbon exchange program that reduces excess hydrocarbon emissions and saves 2,800 tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂) each cycle. Additionally, the company's solar energy projects offset greenhouse gas emissions by 770 tons of CO₂/MWh annually. 
• SMX^TM Technology, a proprietary technology developed by Chemicals Business, SCG, which helps create superior strength plastic resins that consume less plastic. As the end product is lighter, the shipping weight is reduced, leading to reduced greenhouse gas emissions generated during the transportation process.
• Bioplastics made from agricultural waste can help to minimize global warming by absorbing excess greenhouse gases. The collaborative efforts between domestic and international R&D networks have yielded the development of bioplastics for high-efficiency applications, such as films used in the food packaging industry.

Circular Economy
The "Make-Use-Return" paradigm based on the circular economy principle is increasingly being recognized by all sectors of society. Chemicals Business, SCG, has pushed and played a vital role in bringing such a concept to fruition through various business activities. One of the notable projects is Waste-Free Community, an initiative that promotes and builds community partnership by engaging core societal elements of homes, temples, and schools to establish proper waste management at source. This initiative is a lesson taken from the internal waste management project called the Bang Sue Model that encourages SCG employees to embrace greener habits in keeping with the approach of "Resource Maximization, Correct Sorting, Proper Disposal."

An initiative that follows the Waste-Free Community project is repurposing LLDPE school milk bags into chairs. Chemicals Business, SCG, has offered its plastic expertise and know-how to help manage milk bag waste at Watkhodhinmitraphaptee 42 School. Thanks to this recycling effort, the making of one chair can save up to 600 milk bags from being thrown away. SCG Fish Home, which is currently in its ninth year, is another notable circular economy-based project.  The project's mission has expanded from making fish homes from merely out of leftover PE100 pipes to an upgraded version of fish homes that can incorporate sorted marine plastic debris and community solid waste such as bottle caps and plastic bags as part of the constituent components. Currently, a total of 2,180 fish homes have been placed in 43 fishing areas, spanning 47 square kilometers of marine resource conservation area, thanks to the support of more than 22,900 volunteers from across the country. The effort has aided in the reintroduction of 172 species of marine biodiversity.

Health and Safety
At Chemicals Business, SCG, all operational activities are crucial to business growth and must not adversely impact the health and safety of employees, business partners, and the environment. The company works to put in place safety measures for employees and business partners and introduce a program that enhances the public and community's wellness. Our health and safety measures also align with SDG 3, which is to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

The Lifesaver^TM is another project developed by Chemicals Business, SCG, to care for the community by promoting a safe culture within the company. The project encourages all employees to become lifesavers to look out for one another and keep everyone safe during work hours and at all times.

The success of Chemicals Business, SCG, driven through three core approaches, is a clear reflection of the company's commitment to achieving "Social Growth, Sustainable Community, and Healthy Environment." And we will continue to take the initiative and push for development to strengthen our society, community, and environment, which are the cornerstones of sustainable development.
