Pineapple Fiber Fabric from the San Yai Khon San Witee Weaving Community Enterprise, Rayong Province

Rayong Province is renowned as Thailand's third-largest pineapple growing area, especially within the Nikom Pattana and Pluak Daeng districts, where pineapples are extensively planted and harvested throughout the year. However, this crop is typically planted and harvested once per plant and then replanted. After harvesting, the pineapple leaves are buried and burned, leading to air pollution and contributing to global warming. Additionally, burying the leaves is not beneficial for subsequent planting, as pineapple leaves are thick and tough, making them difficult to decompose. Buried leaves can become breeding grounds for diseases, adversely affecting the yield. To address this, the San Yai Community Weaving Enterprise from the Pluak Daeng District in Rayong Province initiated a project to maximize the value of agricultural waste like pineapple leaves.

By transforming these leaves into fibers and weaving them into fabric, garments made from pineapple fibers have distinctive properties superior to those of regular fabrics. They are breathable, crafted using traditional weaving techniques, and feature unique patterns symbolic of Rayong Province. Furthermore, since these products are made from natural materials, they do not contribute to pollution or produce wastewater from chemicals commonly associated with the conventional textile industry. Such practices promote efficient resource usage, adhere to the principles of a circular economy, mitigate the effects of global warming, and provide sustainable income for community members.

SCGC values the promotion of local wisdom. We collaborate with communities, exchanging ideas to produce innovative products, such as items made from denim fabric. We support providing advanced tools, like modern weaving looms, that increase production speed compared to traditional equipment. Furthermore, we organize activities that have elevated the community's profile, allowing them to represent the province at national events and achieve a 5-star OTOP (One Tambon One Product) product rating. SCGC is committed to fostering a practical circular economy in everyone's daily life, ensuring the community's sustainable income while managing local resources efficiently.
