Circular Plastics Collaborates with Dutch Brick Manufacturers, Switch to Returnable Plastic Pallets, Reducing Waste and Sustainable Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Business ESG Circular Economy Innovation Product Service Solutions Sustainability

Dutch brick manufacturers under the Royal Dutch Construction Ceramics (KNB) association have collaborated with Circular Plastics, a Netherlands-based company subsidiary of SCGC business group, in partnership with Cabka, a manufacturer and distributor of reusable plastic pallets. The collaboration aims to switch to returnable plastic pallets for decorative facade bricks, reducing waste and minimizing carbon dioxide emissions. KNB will provide sustainable transportation and packaging services, while Cabka will supply the reusable plastic pallets. This initiative not only reduces waste, but also contributes to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions

Circular economy, waste reduction, and carbon dioxide emission reduction are key to the entire construction industry within their ESG strategy (environment, social and governance) This is the reason why brick manufacturers within KNB have united and started the transition from single-use wooden pallets to returnable plastic pallets made from 100% recyclable plastic. This initiative also aligns with the industry's commitment to sustainability and is also part of the Construction Ceramics 2030 Technology Roadmap.

Extensive tests have been realized in the filling lines and total logistic operation of the brick manufacturers demonstrating the efficiency in handling, the strength and durability of the pallets to demonstrate the advantage in comparison to the wooden one-way pallet. After its successful launch in the market the project will be implemented in construction sites, and eventually, it will be expanded to other projects for substitution of one-way packaging to circular packaging used in a closed loop.

In addition to the collaboration with Cabka, Circular Plastics also partnered with Xella Netherlands to utilize circular plastic pallets, helping reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 70 tons per year. Xella worked altogether with partners of Circular Plastics Alliance, including construction material suppliers and contractors, to become the first manufacturer and builder in the Netherlands to transition from traditional wooden pallets to sustainable plastic pallets made from recycled plastic.
