SCGC and Water Management Innovations

Business ESG Circular Economy Innovation Solutions Sustainability

We all know that "water” is essential to life. When clean water is easily accessible or adequately maintained, people will enjoy a higher quality of life.

SCG Chemicals Public Company Limited, or SCGC, recognizes the importance of water resources in all people's lives. As a result, it has developed a range of water management solutions, from large-scale infrastructure to wastewater treatment systems for hygienic purposes.

PE112 for Water Supply Pipeline that Contributes to Community Quality of Life

Koh Samui in Surat Thani province is one of Thailand's top tourist destinations, attracting over 3 million visitors annually, a number that is certain to increase. Consumable fresh water was once in short supply in the area. However, this issue was resolved with the introduction of a plastic innovation developed by SCGC, leading to the deployment of Thailand's first large-scale submarine water supply pipeline.

SCGC, in collaboration with the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA), launched the "Samui Submarine Water Pipeline Construction," employing the innovative PE112 plastic resins with the grade for manufacturing plumping in the commercial industry for the water pipeline process. With the unique property of resins that are tougher and more durable than conventional PE100 resins on the market, it has a 10% higher capacity to withstand the pressure inside and outside the pipe, a 50% higher abrasion resistance as measured by the Sand Slurry test, and greater flexibility and bendability, making submersion easier. As a result, the pipeline has a longer lifespan.

The pipeline spans over 120 kilometers, consisting of a 100-kilometer land pipeline from Phun Phin to the coastline of Khanom District, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and a 20-kilometer underwater pipeline from the mainland to Koh Samui. In addition, approximately 65,580 households in the districts traversed by the pipeline, including Phun Phin, Muang Surat Thani, Kanchanadit, Don Sak, and parts of Khanom, can enjoy access to clean water. SCGC has effectively carried out its mission to improve the quality of life.

elixir: Material for safe and long-lasting water tanks

Many families choose to buy water tanks as a means of storing water for household use. On the market, it is offered in a range of options. When selecting a water tank, material standardization is especially crucial, as non-standard tanks may contain harmful chemical additives and serve as microbial breeding grounds.

With a commitment to enhancing everyone's quality of life and a combination of expertise in advanced plastic compound manufacturing methods and materials science, SCGC has developed “elixirTM” — the innovative polymeric materials for ground storage water tanks. It has been proven safe for food and drinks in compliance with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or FDA regulations and the Commission Regulation EU No.10/2011 and AP 89 on contaminants. elixir is free from heavy metals thanks to the advanced polymer blending process called “compounding” Through heat and pressure processing, the finished product is a homogenous blend, resulting in material discoloration. Approved and certified by SGS, its heavy-metal-free feature is compliant with the European Directive 94/62/EC and the TIS No. 656-2556. In addition, the wall thickness of the elixir water tank is between 4.5 and 5.5 millimeters, preventing sunlight from entering the water tank. Therefore, it is unsuitable for moss and bacterial growth. Durability is second to none because it has passed industry requirements (TIS No. 816-2556) and SAI Global's Material Foaming Certification from Australia, guaranteeing the material's strength. It also contains anti-UV agents to protect the plastic from degradation from sunlight and ultraviolet rays. This makes the product last longer, even if it is left out in the sun.

Zyclonic™ wastewater treatment innovation for household hygiene

In addition to innovations that provide people with clean water, SCGC creates an innovation that improves the quality of water so that it is free of pathogens, colors, and odors and can be recycled effectively. The innovation is called Zyclonic™ by SCGC.

Zyclonic™ is a treatment system for wastewater. It helps enhance the quality of greywater from toilets and domestic wastewater, which can be connected directly to the building's septic tank and cesspool. Zyclonic™ incorporates key components including Aquonic, a wastewater treatment innovation that can transform greywater from toilets, bathrooms, and sinks into pathogen-free water for reuse.  For example, greywater from the toilet can be utilized for irrigation. Users can install it with the septic tanks currently in use to improve the quality of wastewater discharged from the tank. Another component is Zyclone Cube, the innovation that converts wastewater and solids into usable materials by heating them at a temperature of 100-120 degrees Celsius. The solids are then used as a soil conditioner, and the sterilized water can be used for household consumption. The innovation also features the built-in Zyclone Separator that can effectively separate water and solid waste by 98%. It is an innovation that promotes hygiene and resource efficiency.

SCGC recognizes the importance and value of water resources to all life. As a result, chemical innovations and solutions for efficient water management are developed as alternatives that enhance the quality of life for consumers and benefit every household.
