Get to Know SCGC, Chemicals Business for Sustainability in ASEAN and its Path to Growth

Business ESG Circular Economy Sustainability

In a world full of dynamics and challenges, seizing new business opportunities is possible if businesses continue relentlessly to explore and develop innovations to meet consumer needs. This is exemplified by the growth trajectory of SCG Chemicals Public Company Limited, or SCGC, which has followed such a pattern to keep pace with global trends.

40 years on chemical business path

About 40 years ago, Thailand's petrochemical industry was in its infancy. SCG Chemicals or SCGC began operations at that time with the primary business of producing plastic resins or polymers that can be molded into a wide range of products. Since then, it has developed plastic abilities to become plastic innovations all around us. Examples include food packaging, automotive parts, medical equipment, electrical appliances, and infrastructural materials such as pressure-resistant pipelines and telecommunications cables, etc. In addition, the company also operates other businesses providing products such as SCGC Floating Solar Solutions and emisspro® furnace coating. SCGC innovations are all around in daily life because they are tangible and satisfy consumer demands while encompassing innovations in the industrial sector.

SCGC has expanded its domestic and international investments and has become a prominent chemical player in ASEAN, with production bases in Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam, the three countries with the largest economies. Thailand serves as the primary production base, although investments in Indonesia are through a 30.57 percent stake in Chandra Asri Petrochemical Tbk (CAP). In Vietnam, the work is now under construction for the LSP Petrochemical Complex project, and SCGC is the first company to invest in Vietnam's petrochemical industry. With production facilities spread across three countries, SCGC will respond rapidly to market demands and preserve its competitive advantage.

Future from this point forward

SCGC's future growth strategy will focus on addressing the demands of consumers by creating High Value Added Products & Services (HVA) in response to megatrends in five areas: urbanization-driven infrastructure improvements, electric vehicles, the transition to clean energy, and healthcare. In addition, it also created environmental solutions, namely Green Polymer, to achieve the goals in four areas: (1) Reduce – reducing resource consumption and maximizing resource efficiency, (2) Recyclable – substituting conventional packaging with one that is efficiently recyclable, (3) Recycle – adopting recycling to reduce the waste amount and reduce resource consumption, and (4) Renewable - developing bio compostable plastic and plastic made from renewable resources like plants to lower resource efficiency goals and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Additionally, SCGC has never ceased searching for ways to innovate to stay up with ever-changing global trends promptly. Apart from internal technology development, it also seeks collaboration with a network of external agencies to explore new ideas. The i2P Center (Ideas to Products) was established as a repository of creativity and innovation that caters to customer needs. It aims to uncover commercial prospects, innovate, and provide consultancy in terms of material formulation and design for value addition, ranging from engineering design or product design to product forming or quality testing, which can be further for practical purposes. The i2P Center makes it possible to create innovations rapidly and thoroughly, enabling innovation for today and the future.

Reshaping SCGC image in new dimensions

To maintain its position as the leading integrated chemicals business for sustainability, SCGC aims to conduct business following the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) concept, meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and develop products and services to meet the changing global demands. At the same time, it has reshaped its branding to clearly reflect SCGC's identity with a redesigned logo with a graphical hexagonal shape of a leaf embedded with the letters "SCGC." This is to demonstrate its long-upheld ideal of sustainable business practices and its determination to innovate and contribute to strengthening the economy and enhancing people's quality of life. The letter "SCGC" is short for SCG Chemicals, designed to be unique and express stability. The colors also impart meaningful messages: Blue denotes innovation and responsibility; green denotes business operation for sustainability; red denotes SCG heritage, and yellow denotes its proactive drive to achieve growth.

Not only is the brand's logo evolving. SCGC has also introduced the business concept INNOVATION THAT'S REAL to emphasize the branding of SCGC's limitless innovations, which result in innovations around us in everyday life to improve the quality of life in every way.
