SCG X EMF: World-class Collaboration for the Advancement of the Circular Economy

As the public is growing increasingly eco-conscious, the government sector is also formulating and introducing stringent laws and regulations to promote environmental quality, while industrial sectors are undergoing major transformation to support sustainable growth in the long term.

SCG, as a leading organization in Thailand, recognizes the importance of such a transition and has thus integrated the principles of the circular economy, which promotes resource efficiency, into its business strategies and applied them to its collaboration with domestic and international organizations across all sectors, including the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF).

Accelerating a Global Transition to a Circular Economy
The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, of which SCG is the only member from Thailand, is a non-profit organization founded in the UK in 2010 that seeks to drive all sectors to transition to a circular economy. This socially and environmentally friendly economic system has given rise to various new business models as well as products and services designed for recyclability. A circular economy also resonates with the natural state of things, in which nothing goes to waste.

The work of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) focuses on six interconnected areas:

  • Learning: To prompt a transition to a circular economy, the Foundation believes all sectors must be given learning support in order to form a foundation for the development of vision, skills, and knowledge related to the circular economy.
  • Fostering relations with businesses: Since its launch, the Foundation has recognized the importance of driving circular innovations and has thus acted as a hub that brings together all sectors, including government organizations, leading companies, and startups, to foster and expand a circular economy.
  • Supporting governments: The Foundation plays a key role in fully realizing a circular economy by working with local and national government agencies to foster an understanding of the circular economy among policymakers and support mechanisms for public-private collaborations.
  • Analysis and information provision: The Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) can help assess the feasibility of a circular model and provide suggestions for quantifying the value of such a model.
  • Systemic initiatives: To reduce challenges and limitations arising in an attempt to adopt the principles of the circular economy, the Foundation acts as a bridge that brings together leading organizations in the value chain and promotes collaboration.
  • Communications: The Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) has compiled and published cutting-edge ideas and insight on the circular economy in the forms of research reports, case studies, and books, all made available online so that they are accessible to everyone in the world.

SCG: A Thai Circular Economy on the Global Stage
As Thailand’s first leading corporation to have joined the EMF, a non-profit organization that serves as a key organization in driving a global transition to a circular economy, SCG has taken this opportunity to learn about the circular economy from its representatives and member organizations as well as introduce its own circular economy concepts and practices under the umbrella of SCG Circular Way, which have been implemented continuously through various projects and activities and carried through to workshops and summits organized by the Foundation.

The partnership between SCG and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation marks the beginning of an opportunity to build new knowledge and expand a circular economy network on an international level to support a successful and sustainable transition to a circular economy.
