SCGC x Plastics2Olefins: Driving Decarbonization and Circular Economy

Business Digitization

At the recent Plastics2Olefins General Assembly in Alicante, SCGC and partners gathered to evaluate the progress made over the past six months and assess the project's overall status. Hosted by ACTECO, Productos y Servicios S.L., the meeting aimed to clarify the project's current position and outline its future direction. Participants focused on essential activities for Plastics2Olefins' success, agreeing on immediate next steps and consortium-level meetings, while also fostering stronger team relationships. The assembly highlighted the transformation of plastic waste into valuable olefins using cutting-edge pyrolysis technology, reinforcing the initiative's commitment to sustainability and aligning with the European Green Deal's objectives for a circular economy by 2050.

SCGC played a pivotal role by performing the feasibility study on the replication potential of the Plastics2Olefins technology. This initiative is crucial for scaling the recycling solution across Europe and potentially into ASEAN countries, supporting SCGC's ambitious goal of producing green products.

The project addresses the challenge of recycling unsorted plastic waste by utilizing high-temperature pyrolysis, which aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional methods. Moving forward, enhancing team collaboration and strategic coordination will be key to achieving these ambitious goals, ensuring that Plastics2Olefins continues to lead in sustainable recycling innovation.

The collaboration between SCGC and the Plastics2Olefins project is rooted in a shared vision for a sustainable future. Initiated under the Horizon Europe program, this partnership seeks to transform plastic waste into high-value materials, thereby closing the loop on plastic recycling. SCGC’s expertise in chemical processes and commitment to environmental sustainability make it an ideal partner in this venture. As part of the consortium, SCGC contributes its knowledge and resources to develop solutions adaptable globally. This collaboration not only advances technological innovation but also reinforces a collective commitment to reducing environmental impact and fostering a circular economy.

The partner network of Plastics2Olefins includes SCGC - SCG Chemicals, Repsol, ETIA Ecotechnologies (VOW Group), CIEMAT, PreZero España, ARTTIC Innovation, VTT, DTU - Technical University of Denmark, Smart Innovation Norway, Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, Tecnicas Reunidas, Holcim, and Vow ASA.
