Alliance to End Plastic Waste Progress Report 2023: Advancing Circularity Solutions for Change

Singapore – 1 July 2024: Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) and its partners including SCGC have collectively made important strides in its journey to help advance a circular economy for plastics. The recently-published report ‘2023 Progress Report’ highlights the continued growth in plastic waste management challenges and the circularity thereof, while emphasizing the importance of collaborative progress achieved on developing, de-risking, and communication of scalable solutions.

The 2023 Progress Report also includes the following key points:

• • The AEPW has achieved substantial progress in reducing unmanaged plastic waste and promoting circular economy practices through various projects implemented worldwide.
  • The Alliance has successfully secured substantial funding from external sources to support its initiatives, enabling the expansion and acceleration of its efforts.
  • They highlight the necessity of adopting a systematic approach to collecting and processing plastic waste as a fundamental foundation for establishing a circular economy.

Established in January 2019 with SCGC as one of the founding members, the Alliance to End Plastic Waste (AEPW) has pursued a four-area strategy including 1) Infrastructure development to collect and manage waste and increase recycling; 2) Innovation to advance and scale new technologies that make recycling and recovering plastics easier and create value from all post-use plastics; 3) Education and engagement of governments, businesses, and communities to mobilize action; and, 4) Clean up concentrated areas of plastic waste already in the environment, particularly the major conduits of waste, like rivers, that carry land-based plastic waste to the ocean.

Co-founding the Alliance and actively driving progress in the region, SCGC in recent years has contributed to AEPW initiatives with both material and engineering expertise. We have promoted infrastructure solutions where plastics can be used as raw materials and invested in innovations that convert plastic waste into new products. As part of its commitment to the Alliance, we additionally have supported a global campaign to remove litter from the environment on World Cleanup Day.
