Business Sustainability

Rayong - 14 June 2023 Subsidiaries of SCG Chemicals, or SCGC, have been selected to receive accolades for piloting proactive environmental management initiatives. This recognition further cements SCGC's position as a leading Chemicals Business for Sustainability that conducts its operations based on corporate governance principles while prioritizing environmental and social stewardship in line with ESG targets. SCGC is prepared to collaborate with all sectors to enhance industrial standards to answer the call for sustainability. Pichet Tangpanyarat, Managing Director of Rayong Olefins Company Limited, a subsidiary of SCGC and Corporate Environment Chairman, along with Poramate Chairat, Sustainability Director of SCGC, led the teams from SCGC subsidiaries, namely, Rayong Olefins Company Limited (ROC), Map Ta Phut Olefins Company Limited (MOC), and Map Ta Phut Tank Terminal Company Limited (MTT) to receive the certificate from Supoj Toh-arjharn, Deputy Governor of Rayong Province at the Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate Office.

SCGC puts considerable emphasis on continuous air quality improvement, specifically by aiming to reduce Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) emissions from industrial plants to levels below legal standards. The pilot project of proactive environmental management, undertaken by ROC, MOC, and MTT, has been operational since 2018. The focus has been on improving the efficiency of controlling Benzene and 1,3-Butadiene emissions from plants. This is achieved using the Code of Practice (CoP) to compile a VOCs inventory, serving as a database for project management and facilitating collaboration with local operators for knowledge and technology exchange. These shared insights include techniques for enhancing production processes and managing VOCs within plants, collectively contributing to improved air quality. This collaborative approach paves the way for setting higher standards. Currently, SCGC has extended its successful implementation to all plants in the Map Ta Phut area, covering 100% of relevant VOCs management.

At the event, Pichayapisit Im-amnuaylarp, Production Manager of Thai MMA Company Limited (TMMA), an SCGC subsidiary, shared her experiences on the application of the Code of Practice (CoP) for proactive environmental management within the plant, turning it into a model plant within SCGC.

The proactive environmental management project is a joint collaboration between the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand and the Federation of Thai Industries. Apichai Charoensuk, Deputy Chairman of the Petrochemical Group of the Federation of Thai Industries, serves as the working group's chairman. The group comprises various government agencies such as the Department of Industrial Works, the Pollution Control Department, the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning, the Provincial Office of Natural Resources and Environment Rayong, the Map Ta Phut Municipality, and the Petroleum Institute of Thailand acting as advisors. This collective effort is dedicated to integrating all relevant sectors, driven by a positive attitude toward managing Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from the industrial sector. The aim is to elevate standards, foster knowledge, exchange technology, and establish good environmental conservation practices. In addition, it seeks to extend the implementation to other regions across Thailand through the Ministry of Industry's regulations. These have led to the effective issuance of three sets of ministerial regulations: the Ministerial Regulation on Controlling VOC Emissions from Storage Tanks 2022, the Ministerial Regulation on Controlling VOC Emissions from Maintenance 2022, and the Ministerial Regulation on Controlling the Flare Usage 2022.
