SCG's Floating Litter Trap to Prevent Marine Debris Entering Oceans at Rayong Estuaries and Samut Sakhon Canals

BANGKOK – July 30, 2019 Mr. Cholanat Yanaranop, President of Chemicals Business, SCG, and Mr. Jatuporn Buruspat, DMCR Director-General signed a memorandum of cooperation (MoC) for joint efforts to “develop floating litter trap installed in the estuaries and canals to prevent waste from entering the sea, a solution to solve the marine waste problem

The floating litter trap is the initial prototype that posses unique functions of bypass flap leveraging natural water flow and pressure that can efficiently capture floating trash. The litter trap’s maximum collection capacity is 700 kilograms, and its functionality can ensure that the trapped debris will not be carried away to downstream by tidal movement.  In the testing phase, t5 floating litter traps will be installed in Rayong estuaries and some canals in Samut Sakhon province.  The floating litter traps will be added in 20 more locations by July 2019 which are expected to catch over 30 tons of waste between July to December 2019.

Moreover, SCG is preparing to design the new floating litter trap 4.0 that will incorporate automation and solar power system aimed at improving the efficiency and increasing officer’s convenience. SCG will continuously study on the further utilization of the collected wastes following the circular economy concept.
