Fish Return Home Project

To assist with the restoration and conservation of marine resources, SCG Chemicals initiated the "Fish Return Home, Ngarm Tah Shore" project, by transforming PE 100 pipes left over from polyethylene plastic experiments, to construct a mock-up fish habitat. The outcome is a kindergarten for small marine animals that serves as a niche for other sea creatures as well as increasing the opportunity for local fishermen from within the community to raise additional income. Personnel from SCG Chemicals, local fishermen, and local volunteers cooperated in this project on 1st December 2012 at the Klaeng Ka Chet sub district, Mueng district, Rayong province.

PE 100…From Pipelines to A Model Fish Habitat Polyethylene pipe, or PE, are produced from polyethylene plastic and used to transfer drinking water. They have passed safety standards by the VVT, Finland and other institutions around the world to prove that no toxic chemicals are present in drinking water and seawater, and have a shelf life up to 100 years. Reusing PE 100 pipes left over from manufacturing for model fish habitats will lower energy consumption in waste management, reduce toxic substances, and is harmless for land and marine environments. Model fish habitats require 110 mm. and 250 mm. PE pipes. They are linked together to form a total of a hundred 2-square-meter pyramids and placed in appropriate locations in the sea in Rayong. The behaviors of organisms are studied and recorded every three months and this is expected to be completed in August 2013. Not Just a Fish Habitat, but a Habitat for Everyone. 

There are three objectives for this project.

1. First is the restoration of marine resources, and we hope that once we install the homes, there will be many fish living in it. This will increase the natural marine resources.

2. The project aims to increase jobs and income for local fishermen.

3. The project answers to "SCG Chemicals Loves the Environment" because if we do not reuse PE pipes, they will have to be recycled which wastes energy.

"Cooperation" and "Sustainability" are at the core of CSR. Aside from appreciating the success of this project, locals have actively participated right from the start. "Local fishermen have to construct the model fish habitat themselves so they can feel a sense of ownership. We give what we have, our staff do not come and construct the habitats, the community and land owners must work together on that in order to achieve sustainability." If the ocean is abundant with sea creatures, then that is a guarantee of a good lifestyle. If everyone acknowledges that the fish habitat is also their habitat, they will take lots of care and protection.
