Career Trends 2024: “Job Rotation” Changing Roles to Enhance Knowledge and Skills

Career Story Interviews

SCGC is committed to developing the potential of its employees at all levels by promoting and training modern skills. This is to prepare and adapt them to the latest career trends and new job roles, alongside creating and developing chemical innovations and new technologies that improve the quality of life for everyone in society and are environmentally friendly. These efforts align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the principles of the Circular Economy.

In this interview with Napol “Gof” Hengbumrung, Assistant Manager of Rapid Application Development, he shares insights on how job rotation works at SCGC. This approach provides employees the opportunity to try new tasks to discover what they excel at and perform best. Consequently, it allows employees to clearly and quickly showcase their capabilities, creating a sustainable impact on the company.
Question: Describe a turning point that made you decide to undertake job rotation, which is different from what you studied and had been doing.

I applied for a position as a maintenance engineer at SCGC, in line with my educational background. However, driven by a personal interest in working with data and digital technology, and considering the global trend of transitioning fully into a digital era—a trend that is gaining popularity—I decided to step out of my comfort zone. I transitioned into the role of a Financial Analyst, where I went deeper into data analysis. During my tenure in this position, I established new standards for financial validation at SCGC by developing diagnostic tools to assess the financial impact of changing assumptions. These tools significantly improved the accuracy of investment opportunity evaluations. Additionally, I shared my knowledge by conducting training sessions on financial validation for FI leaders and project leaders within the company. Subsequently, I transitioned to HR Shared Services, where I applied data analytics to HR functions. This experience eventually led me to my current role, where I fully embrace and drive digital work. This journey has allowed me to develop myself gradually and finally do what I truly love.

Question: What challenges have you encountered in your new role as a data driver for the organization?

For me, the biggest challenge is shifting the mindset to ensure that everyone can see the value of being data-driven and truly leverage data effectively. This involves continuous communication to inspire and motivate, alongside launching pilot projects such as the Power Platform Bootcamp (now known as Digital Bootcamp). These initiatives demonstrate that we can indeed create added value for the business and extend this approach until it becomes embedded in the organization's culture.

Question: How did you adapt to a new role driven by data?

Adapting to this new role required me to develop both hard skills and soft skills. This means learning the cutting-edge tools and technologies essential for the job while also practicing strategic thinking and gaining a clear overall view of the business. For me, leveraging my background in financial validation has been particularly useful. This knowledge helps in understanding the deeper issues and needs of clients, enabling me to analyze data accurately, design effective solutions, and drive changes in collaboration with other departments to achieve sustainable results.

Question: How do you envision your path as a Data Driver?

I believe that data analytics, AI, and digital transformation will become key to creating competitive advantages and driving positive business impacts in the long run. This belief fuels me to continuously improve myself by taking various online courses, such as those offered by Coursera, provided by our Learning department. The goal is to foster and pass on this work in data to grow sustainably by developing teams and new leaders who will carry on this mission. This effort aims to be a significant force in steering SCGC towards success.

Question: Do you have any advice for those who are thinking about changing positions but are hesitant to decide?

My first piece of advice is to have the courage to step out of your comfort zone and pursue your passion. It is crucial not to fear mistakes or new beginnings because every time we venture into the growth zone, we learn, grow, and discover our great potential. Believe in yourself, stay committed to continuous learning and development, and success will follow. Above all, we must thank SCGC for providing all these experiences and offering employees at every level the opportunity to engage in effective job rotations.
