Sirplaste, a member company of SCG Chemicals (SCGC), a leader in plastic recycling in Portugal, has enhanced the quality of Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) resins in the SIRPRIME natural and white rHDPE product groups. They are suitable as primary packages for all "Leave-on" categories for both adults and infants, according to CosPaTox (Cosmetics, Packaging and Toxicology), a safety standard for Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) used in various packaging applications. This achievement underscores the commitment to developing high-quality, safe-to-use recycled plastic and empowering brands to achieve their sustainability goals through eco-friendly packaging.

Transforming Eco-Friendly Packaging with Superior Standards

Since packaging for sensitive products or those in prolonged contact with the body — such as cosmetics, skincare, and even infant care — must be manufactured from materials that meet the highest safety standards to ensure consumer confidence, CosPaTox, a European industry consortium, was established to develop standardised guidelines focusing on the safety of recycled plastics. It defines toxicological safety protocols for Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) plastics used in cosmetic and detergent packaging. Initially, the focus is on polyolefins, including rHDPE, rLDPE, and rPP, across three main packaging categories: cosmetics leave-on, cosmetics rinse-off, and wash-and-cleaning detergents.

SIRPRIME natural and white rHDPE recycled plastics from Sirplaste have proved themselves in the "Leave-on" standard according to CosPaTox guideline, the category requiring the highest level of safety. Through expertise in recycling innovation, Sirplaste is able to control the quality of recycled plastic resins to align perfectly with specific packaging applications.

Transitioning to Sustainability with Recycled Plastic Packaging

The European region is moving toward a policy shift to more sustainable packaging through the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which will take effect starting in 2025. This regulation tightens requirements for packaging throughout the entire value chain—from design and material selection to waste management—to ensure that all packaging is truly recyclable. It also concretely promotes the use of recycled content in plastic packaging while maintaining consumer safety standards, particularly for consumer goods and cosmetics packaging.

"SIRPRIME" is a 100% PCR HDPE resin, produced using high-efficiency recycling technology designed for superior odour and contaminant removal. It is specifically suitable for personal care and household product packaging. Previously, SIRPRIME received RecyClass certification, a European standard verifying that the raw materials truly originate from post-consumer plastics, before further developing with the CosPaTox guideline to ensure the material is safe for cosmetic packaging and skincare products for adults and infants that prioritise gentleness.

Sirplaste, a member company of SCGC, has a vital mission to support brands in achieving their sustainability goals through advanced recycling innovations. Our recycled plastic resins not only help customers reduce their reliance on virgin plastic but also deliver excellent properties in terms of performance, quality, and safety.
