Eco Innovation

Eco innovation has been incorporated into Chemicals Business, SCG's strategy, in line with the SCG Sustainable Development Pathway. It incorporates:

Eco factory development, consisting of production efficiency enhancement leading to reduction of natural resources utilization and environmental pollution, at the same time raising eco efficiency.

Eco supply chain improvement, which includes enhancing efficiency of trading and business partners and minimizing their impact on the environment.

Eco products, involving development of products and production processes with a view to delivering environmentally friendly products.

Eco-to-other-organizations which includes participation in development of communities, schools, and temples to instill awareness and to encourage undertakings aimed at environmental conservation, as well as to promote sustainable enterprises among communities in order to move towards Eco Industrial Towns.

Chemicals Business, SCG, sustainable development strategy is established for use as guidelines for work plan preparation.

Enclosure Ground Flare
Air Movement caused by the difference in temperatures is used to draw air for combustion, as opposed to the use of high pressure steam. This helps reduce steam noises, achieves better combustion and is smokeless, as the flame occurs in the combustion chamber. Reducing glare and heat release to the atmosphere. This type of flare system management has been designed with the impact on all parties in mind.
The Chemicals Business, SCG, Olefins Plants Hydrocarbon Exchange Project
Under this project, flare gas is recovered through application of a system whereby hydrocarbon gas which is normally flared during facility shutdown or start-up is recovered to be reused as fuel rather than being flared away. This reduces hydrocarbon loss through flaring by 450 tons and carbon dioxide emission by 2,800 tons per one operation.
Superior coating substances for energy conservation in industrial works
SCG is the first inventor in Thailand of emisspro® and absorpro™, superior coating substances for industrial furnaces and boilers, which significantly improve the efficiency of energy management in industrial works. The coating substances reduce heat loss in the production process, leading to 2-6% energy saving. SCG provides full service, from consulting, spraying to maintenance.
Shinkolite™ acrylic sheets, an innovative product manufactured with the world’s most modern continuous casting technology. Shinkolite™ comes in three grades to address all types of applications:
- DX, for general jobs
- LX, for light dispersion jobs, and
- PX for sanitaryware jobs
With its unique property requiring a heat-forming temperature lower than other acrylic sheets, Shinkolite™ DX allows easy, speedy and energy-saving formability. Its crystal clarity with no impurities results from the closed production process. Rigorous quality control at every stage of production ensures uniform thickness. Such qualities which Shinkolite™ possesses provide assurance that every acrylic sheet assembly job can be finished with excellent quality, clarity, and minimum waste:

Ci-Bot (Carburization Inspection Robot)
The Ci-Bot inspects the amount of carbon that penetrates material of tubes (coils in cracking furnaces in olefin plants) that operate under extreme heat for an extended period of time. This may cause embrittlement which leads to leakage or breakage of the cracking tubes. The Ci-Bot can inspect and meticulously, precisely and speedily assess the longevity of the pipes.
Eco Factory
Criteria were developed by the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) in 2014. Covering all five aspects (physical, economic, social, environmental and administration) the criteria contain 14 features with the focus placed on Eco-Symbiosis and continuous improvement. Also in 2014, the criteria were adopted by Rayong Olefins Co., Ltd. and Thai Polyethylene Co., Ltd., both of which are in Chemicals Business, raising their environmental management standards. They successfully passed the criteria and were consequently certified by the FTI as Thailand’s first two eco factories. In 2015, the other 10 companies with 12 factories in Chemicals Business underwent the eco factory certification process and were all certified by the FTI. The certification marked Thailand’s first industrial group with 100 percent eco factory content.
Green Industry
As outlined by the Ministry of Industry, economic growth and business prosperity should go hand-in-hand with ecological potential possibilities as well as social well-being. These projects are but some proactive conservation efforts made by the Ministry in which business operators can take part. The ultimate aim is to make business operations more and more friendly to the environment.
The Green Industry criteria cover five levels; namely,

Level 1

Green Commitment: An organization shall have policy and commitment to reduce environmental impacts and effectively communicate among the various levels of the organization.

Level 2

Green Activities: An organization shall establish and implement program(s) to reduce environmental impacts based on the policy and commitment from level 1.

Level 3

Green System: An organization shall have either systematic environmental management (including monitoring, assessment and review for continuous improvement) including well-recognized environmental management award and certificate.

Level 4

Green Culture: An organization shall demonstrate everyone’s accountability on environmental and social concerns as an integral part of the organization’s culture.

Level 5

Green Network: An organization shall incorporate entities of their supply chains into the green industry umbrella.

Map Ta Phut Olefins Co., Ltd., a company in the group, is the first petrochemical factory in Thailand to have been certified for Level 5, Green Network.
Sustainable Development Project

On the use of raw materials
Stress has been placed on increasing production efficiency and Eco Symbiosis. Since 2007, 80,000 tons per year of raw materials has been reduced or reused. Projects implemented included:

The Gas Recovery Project at olefins factories.

The Vent Gas Recovery Project of Thai Polyethylene Co., Ltd.

The Off-Gas Recovery Project

The project to recover PTA residues as a partial substitute of raw materials

The Mould Design Project (with the objective of reducing runner waste)

On energy and greenhouse gas
Emphasis is placed on improving production efficiency, waste heat recovery, the use of biogas and Industrial Eco Symbiosis. As a result, since 2007, over 3,100,000 gigajoules of energy has been saved each year, which translates to reduction of 255,000 tons of greenhouse gas emission per year. A solar roof project has also been implemented with a capacity of 743 kWh/day (1,014,000 kWh/year), equivalent to reduction of greenhouse gas emission by 590 tons per year. Water and wastewater management
The 3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) and Industrial Eco Symbiosis are the main principles adopted (e.g., reduction of water loss in the production process and the reuse of waste water). As a result, the use of water from external sources could be reduced by 2,700,000 cubic meters per year. Projects implemented included:

Air quality management
This involves reduction of the release of pollutants into the atmosphere executed from the design state, production control, monitoring, to preventive maintenance.

Waste management

Chemical and hazardous material management
Chemicals in factories are managed in accordance with their compatibility, leakage prevention, emergency response preparedness as well as substitution of existing chemicals with less hazardous substances:

The switching of PET resin color changing agent from cobalt acetate to the Red/Blue toner

Termination of the use of hydrogen peroxide in the wastewater treatment system


On Green Supply Chain
Encouraging trading and business partners to engage in environmentally friendly goods and services, procurement of goods and services causing minimum environmental impact, as well as turning out more environmentally friendly products. In 2014, Chemicals Business, SCG, made a total of 1.05 billion baht worth of green procurement and received several certifications for environmentally friendly products, such as Carbon Reduction Labels, Carbon Footprints of Product Labels and SCG Eco Value Labels.

Green Product

T.U.X™ Film : High quality film for food packaging

A sealant layer film for food packaging developed through cooperation between Chemicals Business, SCG, and Mitsui Chemicals Tohcello, a leading Japanese packaging manufacturer. This thin, clear and durable film, with its ability to withstand penetration, can provide assurance that packaged products are clean, safe, and free from contamination. Besides, the unique characteristics of T.U.X. ™ allow the film to be made thinner, resulting in reduction of the use of plastic and production cost.

Eco Plastic Chair

Made from eco materials with 30% natural content and polypropylene (PP), this chair product helps reduce the use of plastic, an alternative way for environmental conservation.

5 Gallon PET Water Bottle

Made with polyethylene terephthalate, this type of drinking water bottle is BPA (Bisphenal A) free, clean, and safe. It is not a hazard to health, has light weight, is clear and durable, and is certified by the FDA.
