SCG PARTNERS UP WITH PWA TO INSTALL THE WORLD'S FIRST-EVER PE112 SUBMARINE PIPELINE TO IMPORT FRESHWATER TO KOH SAMUI

Surat Thani – March 14, 2019  Chemicals Business, SCG has partnered up with the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA) in Thailand’s first-ever underwater pipeline installation project, featuring a freshwater water pipeline of approximately 20 kilometers from Khanom District in Nakhon Si Thammarat to Samui in Surat Thani. The subsea pipes are made with the world’s first PE112, a resin developed by SCG that affords 10% greater pressure resistance in comparison to PE100 available on the market. The material helps ensure that the pipes meet required safety standards and achieve maximum efficiency. The “Samui Submarine Water Pipeline Construction” Project is set to enhance the efficiency of the island’s infrastructure and alleviate water scarcity, which will in turn boost its tourism industry and the economy of the country.

Mr. Nopparat Maythaveekulchai, Governor of the Provincial Waterworks Authority (PWA), said Samui frequently experiences water shortages during dry spells. To meet the demand for water, PWA has initiated the "Samui Submarine Water Pipeline Construction" Project to provide access to tap water to residents across the island. The project has reached completion, and the water delivery to Samui has started. The success of the project is due in part to the innovative material of the pipes, developed by a private business. For this project, PWA has chosen SCG’s PE112, a high-quality resin that affords the pipes with toughness and durability and enables them to withstand subsea pressure, lending the pipeline the strength it needs. The durability of the pipeline has been proven when it was left unaffected after being hit by the tropical storm Pabuk. The installed pipeline will supply water to 64,000 more people in Phunphin, Muang, Kanchanadit, and Donsak Districts on mainland Surat Thani and on Samui.

Samui Submarine Water Pipeline Construction Project
To solve the water scarcity on Samui, Surat Thani in dry seasons sustainably, PWA has constructed a water treatment plant and installed a pipeline running from Donsak District on mainland Surat Thani to Khanom District in Nakhon Si Thammarat, from which a submarine pipeline worth over THB 3 billion is laid across the sea to Samui. The pipeline construction has been complete, and the system will meet the water demand of 64,000 more people, divided into 45,000 water users in Phunphin, Muang, Kanchanadit, and Donsak Districts on mainland Surat Thani and 18,900 on Samui.

Commissioned by PWA, the preliminary environmental impact assessment conducted by Ramkhamhaeng University showed that the project would create minimal environmental impact to the location and would not damage the environment. The project has expanded the service area of PWA to three more districts in Surat Thani and another district in Nakhon Si Thammarat. The pipeline will help accommodate the growing population and the rising number of tourists sustainably.
